The President and CEO of Mohler Communication Strategies Don Mohler recently completed his term as Baltimore County Executive, serving as the Chief Executive of the third largest county in Maryland, a county that is larger than four states, representing over 830,000 residents, 21,000 businesses with a $3.15 billion operating and $700 million capital budget. Don spent his entire career in public service.  He began as a respected teacher, principal and central office administrator, including the responsibility of Assistant Superintendent for Communications and Community Outreach. Don served as a key advisor to four superintendents. Using the skills and lessons learned in the public education arena, Don then served as Communications Director and Chief of Staff to Baltimore County Executives Jim Smith and Kevin Kamenetz. He provided operational assistance by managing special projects and public events, reporting directly to the Baltimore County Executive, while managing access to the Executive. Don managed the organization’s internal and external communications, with an expertise in the area of crisis communication.

By Don Mohler Note: This blog is republished annually on Father’s Day weekend.  It was originally published on June 15, 2019 and is meant to be a reminder that dads, and families, do indeed come in all shapes and sizes.  “Thanks mom.”  Yep, that’s right. Thanks mom. I know it’s Father’s Day, but sorry dads.…

By Don Mohler | June 2, 2022 | Comments Off on Triumphant Sequel in TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Occasionally, noted film and pop culture historian Clint Tsao visits the Front Porch with his latest observations.  By Clint Tsao Nearly unprecedented for a direct film sequel after 36 years, Top Gun: Maverick is an excellent, rousing follow-up to Top Gun and features Tom Cruise in top form. Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) is now a test pilot when he…

It’s Pedal to the Metal Time

By Don Mohler The political arena is not unlike the sporting world. More often than not, who has the momentum matters. In the NFL, pundits tend to view the season in chunks of time. Common wisdom says that you get a pretty good sense of who is up and who is down in four-game intervals.…

There is No Such Thing as “Just A Little Bit Crazy”

By Don Mohler | April 22, 2022 | Comments Off on There is No Such Thing as “Just A Little Bit Crazy”

By Don Mohler More and more, it is becoming clear that the Republican Party in its current form is not the party of Ike, Reagan, Bush, Romney, and McCain. It is the party of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Ron DeSantis, and thousands of local officials across the nation racing to see who…

By Don Mohler | March 29, 2022 | Comments Off on Seeking Divine Intervention to Overthrow an Election

By Don Mohler A recent article by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa in the Washington Post begins this way: “Virginia Thomas, a conservative activist married to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly pressed White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in a series of urgent…

There’s This….and….There’s That

By Don Mohler | February 11, 2022 | Comments Off on There’s This….and….There’s That

By Don Mohler There’s This: The intersection of “crazy meets stupid” becomes more alarming day by day. Over the past week, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green confused gestapo with gazpacho, and the Republican National Committee censured Republicans Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney for daring to participate in a Congressional committee investigating the insurrection that took place…

Maryland’s Gubernatorial Race is Wide Open

By Don Mohler | January 18, 2022 | Comments Off on Maryland’s Gubernatorial Race is Wide Open

By Don Mohler More than three months ago, I wrote a blog that identified some early warning signs for the gubernatorial campaign of Peter Franchot. To be clear, I am supporting Wes Moore for Governor, and I will be sharing my reasons for that decision in the near future. However, that support does not make…

One of These Things Is Not Like the Others

By Don Mohler In his documentaries, Ken Burns often reminds us that it is the actual words of those who were present that create the most powerful historical records. With that in mind, this is a special edition of the “Front Porch,” commemorating a horrific day in American history – January 6, 2021. “One of…
